Help!! I Have Gone Selvage Crazy!!

I know, I know. I have said it before. I love “this” or I LOVE “that.”

But SERIOUSLY… I have fallen in love with sewing selvages. There is one good thing about my new addiction. The selvages will eventually run out. And I will have to go back to sewing selvage-less. 😀

Want to see what I have accomplished in the last couple of weeks? Look at my selvage bin NOW.

When I first showed you, it overflowed and was in some serious need of an intervention.

First off, I pulled out and sewed the strips with the little color dots. I am calling them my Selvage Foundations. There’s over 500 strips here.

I did manage to make a few things. Here is a smaller version of my table runner/wall hanging. Can be used as a mug rug or mini wall hanging. I put triangle tabs on the back for hanging. It measures 12 1/2″ by 14 1/2″.

As you probably guessed, I really like working with this fabric combo. A lot. Rust, light orange and black. For the back, I made Log Cabin borders with the selvages.

Then with the leftover scraps, I made this little mug rug. It measures 9″ by 10″.

It has an inset circle like the quilt I am making.

Here’s the back. I used more of the fabric along with the selvages.

Some of the selvages are really fun. “Let’s go to Molly’s.” We can have coffee in her Backyard. 😀

Next up.

I made these selvage blocks “string style” on the diagonal. Love the green and purple theme. I plan to make one more and then I will scratch my head a couple times to see what ideas are itching to fall out.

So far, I like this one best.

Two more Christmas trees in the works. Just need to sit and sew.

There’s so MUCH in that selvage bin that I organized some of the strips by color. I set aside all of these black and white ones. Going to make something, not sure what.

I also sat aside these really long strips. Planned to work on them further down the road. But I kept staring at them.

What to do!! What to do!! In my stash I found this piece of light green quilted material I bought so many years ago that I don’t remember when. Only the where. JoAnn’s.

With no particular project in mind, I started sewing selvages onto the green quilted foundation. After several hours, I ended up with this. Now I have to decide what to do with it.

I had NO IDEA working with selvages would be so much fun!! Who knew…

What projects are YOU working on? Have you started your holiday shopping? I know what I want for Christmas. Selvages. 😀

  4. Cathy Tomm says:

Many great selvage projects. I have been saving them. I think I might knit a rug like Crazy mom..

  5. Deb says:

Has anyone told you lately what a good eye you have for design and how creative you are? Wow! You might be selvage crazy, but it’s letting you come up with some really cool projects, Donna!

  6. Carol says:

I love seeing selvage projects. I am saving mine and wonder if they will ever compare to YOUR accumulation.
    Happy Thanksgiving.

  7. Your “Selvedge Foundations” are making me swoon! Can’t wait to see where these end up…

  8. Uh-oh. You are totally hooked. I know EXACTLY what you mean! I even have mine organized by theme!

Thanks for linking up this week.

I also love salvages and have a great friend who just today dropped off a bag full. Can’t wait to play with them. Did you use the green quilted for a foundation?? My favorite thing I have made is a tote I take everywhere I can. It is such a fun happy bag.

Hi Patti, I would love to see your bag. I am always looking for ideas.

Yes, I used the green quilted as the foundation for the longer selvage strips. The strips in the last two photos. And I have decided what to make. I am so excited!! Now I have to get started on it.

      Thanks for the question. 😀

  10. Angie says:

I have just started saving my selvages after seeing all of the cute projects being made with them. I hope to someday have as many as you do!

  11. Such fun projects with salvages. The only thing I have really used them for is making salvage snowballs where I frame out snowflakes in a hexagon shape and go out like a log cabin. No Idea what I will use them for yet, but they are fun.

  12. Deb says:

Wowza… that’s a lot of selvages! Fun projects too.

  13. Brenda says:

I love selvedges, too! I have made several little zipper pouches with them, and right now, I am saving up to make a knitting bag. I visited a quilt shop out of town last week, and bought some red Moda “Grunge” to use for the binding and straps, along with a black & white fabric that looks like newsprint to use for the lining, and a really cool black & white print that has stripes and polka dots to use as a contrast. Selvedge is addictive—when I buy fat quarters, I always make sure I am getting the piece that has good selvedge, and I feel like I’ve found some kind of secret treasure or something when I buy fabric that has the selvedges printed with Japanese letters or a shape other than the dots.

Love your ideas! I’ve got a bucket that is overflowing with selvages. I’ll be back to be inspired! Do I really have to be a wordpress user to leave a reply?

    • don_mae says:

Hi Eileen, you shouldn’t have to. I don’t have it set up to require it. Maybe just a glitch. But so glad you were able to leave me a comment. Thank you!! Have fun with your bucket of selvages. I am so jealous!! 😀

  16. You are having way too much selvage fun there! So fun to see what you are up to!

  17. don_mae says:

Hi everyone.. and thanks so much for leaving me a comment. I know what I will make with the larger strips. Just need to get busy. Hopefully I will have something to show you in a few days.

  18. Connie says:

I love working with them. Want to hear something funny? I went through every piece of fabric I have looking for selvages to cut off. Now that is a serious addiction. 😀

  19. Judy Raymond says:
