Downton Abbey Trimming Marathon

Downton Abbey… Don’t you just love the characters!! Maggie Smith is a riot. She really has some deadly zingers.

I am new to this show. Oh, of course, I had heard of it. Just had never watched. How fitting is it that Season 1, Episode 1 begins with the Titanic sinking. And you know my obsession with the Titanic!! Got my attention right off the bat.

Anyhoo… back to the Trimming Marathon. The reason for my post.

I needed something to entertain me for several hours so I could trim the balance of my leftover half-square triangles. The little teeny ones. Didn’t wish to go wonky for them. So I needed to set aside several hours to go about the trimming. I have lots of DVD’s but wanted something new and fresh. Best Buy had Downton Abbey on sale. I bought all three seasons.

So, I assembled everything I needed….

Homemade template. Made from an old VHS cassette case.
Half-square triangles. Scissors.
Downton Abbey DVD’s.

And got started.

I hand trimmed over 600 HST’s and made it through each and every episode. All 3 seasons.

I LOVE this show. Can’t wait until January 2014 to see what happens to Mary. New baby. Dead husband. All the characters are just too delish for words. Just the right tone, look and delivery. My one wish. That they hadn’t killed off the baby sister, Sybil. Well, two wishes. I wish Mary wasn’t so mean to Edith. Poor Edith.

Well, got to go. Need to decide what to do with these 6 1/2″ blocks. I am thinking surround them with HUGE sashing. Maybe. Maybe not. We shall see.

Should have more to show you in a few days. Do come back.

But for now.. I am going back to Downton Abbey. Going to rewatch them all over again. :D

I haven’t watched it, mainly because lately I haven’t been much for period pieces, but apparently its some good stuff because look how much you got done! That’s a lot of trimming Donna! :D

Hi Debra.. And I still have more to trim. I made more little blocks last night. Black and white. Not sure how well they will blend with the “rainbow” colors. May use them for a different project.

Like your squares. Haven’t seen Downtown Abbey, but may put that on my “to watch” list. Have watched Longmire and Arn, the Knight Templar recently. Liked them both.

Hi Sharon, I think you would like Downton Abbey. The storylines are so riveting and characters so complex that you can’t stop watching. I LOVE Longmire!! But I am starting to wonder what the heck is going on. Some of the storylines are too drawn out. Like the murder of Longmire’s wife. Who killed the killer? Was it really Running Bear? I thought Walt did it. I love the cast. They work well together.

  3. I love Downton Abbey too! And I love your HST project…such happy colours!

    • don_mae says:

Thanks, Kathy. I have now watched Downton Abbey all the way through twice. :D I am sure a 3rd is on the horizon.

  4. Allison says:

it is my opinion that the best way to get through a lot of trimming is to put on a good tv series :) your HSTs are looking great

    • don_mae says:

Hi Allison, thanks so much for visiting me. I have more projects started with HST’s. I do believe I will run out of my supply soon. :D

Would you believe i’ve never seen Downtown Abbey….I have heard it is very good though. Love all your teeny HSTs….just how small are they? Great idea making a template! Thanks for sharing.

Hi Connie, sorry for taking so long to reply. I have been without internet service for 3-4 days and my monitor keeps cutting off. (I have to type fast) The little HST’s are trimmed to 1 5/8″. That is the size of my template. It is working out great. Wait until you see what all I have been working on this week. Hopefully my computer will cooperate so I can get the pictures download and posted. Thanks for asking.

(And yes, Downton Abbey is wonderful. Go to Couch Tuner and watch it free.) :D

Donna your half square triangles look great! You are kicking the scrappy girlfriend! As to Downton Abbey, I’m devastated that Mary’s husband had to die…he was such a voice of reason and tempered our nasty Mary! Can’t wait for the next season to see what’s happened and where the show takes things…

  7. Devastated to learn that you are gone. RIP, Donna, and know that you are sadly missed by all your online friends! :-(

So sad. Donna passed a way on July 9th, 2013. Does anyone know what caused her death?
