Made More Macrame Plant Hangers

Made more plant hangers in the last couple days.  A light blue one. In the same pattern as the gray one I posted the tutorial for.

Also made a 5 ft lavender plant hanger with square knot buttons. I’ll have to show you how to make the buttons. They are cool, quick and easy to make.

Plus the SK button is perfect for the “cord switch”. Which is necessary to control cord lengths and ensure you don’t end up with yards and yards of leftover filler cords.

I have a dark brown one almost finished. I cut the cord years ago. I don’t even remember what was planned. I just know that 16 cords of 4 yards each were already on a ring tied with a wrap knot. So… I got started making “something”. It is so far turning out nicely. I am making up the design as I go. It will be a short plant hanger since I only have 2 yard cords to work with. Should be good for hanging on the porch or some spot requiring a smaller plant.

Pictures for the brown one coming up soon. Just wanted to tell you what I am working on now.

Is the square knot button the same as a Chinese button knot? If it is, can you show how you do it, and how you do more than one on the same cord (without cutting)? I’d be really appreciative, as I use them not only in macrame, but in clothing applications and such.

Thanks! And thanks so much for the macrame stuff, too – I’m working on a project now (planning at the moment, digging through the books my mom gave me) and your stuff is wonderful to see. :)

Hi Crinklequirk, not sure what a Chinese button knot looks like but a square knot button is just a few continuous SK’s tied in a straight row, and then tied up & over the knots creating a circle. I’ll be posting some photos today of the lavender plant hanger. I’ll do a tutorial as soon as I can. Thanks so much for your compliments on my work. Appreciate it.

Ah, I know the knot you’re talking about! Thanks!

Here are some nice tutorials for that Chinese button knot I mentioned:

Tied on 1 Cord (i.e., you can do several in a row on your cord, thereby saving cordage):

Note that where they’re putting the safety pin or constriction knot, my mother-in-law taught me to simply put the unused end of the cord, or even just a stray bit of cord. The loops will hold it in place just fine, so you can tighten as needed, and pull it out at the end. For a button, make one as a regular knot, and another with that top loop loosened just enough to wiggle over the other button.

        Can’t wait for your tutorials!

Do you make these and sell them?

Hi Louise, I sure do. I don’t have any listed on Etsy but can do a listing for you if you are interested. Let me know and thanks much for asking.
