Decided NOT to throw in the towel afterall after hearing from quite a few of you via e-mail and through your comments on my post. Thank you for your encouragement and telling me not to give up.
So…. off I went in search of online instructions. I found some useful videos at Graspr. http://www.graspr.com/. The Instructional Video Network. I played and replayed the crochet videos on making slip knots and chain stitches as I practiced.
Here is a length of chain stitches I created last night. I made a long row, pulled them out, made another. I kept at this until I became bored. I plan to pull these out too and start over.

The skein I am working from only had an end visible from the outside. I searched some crochet Q & A’s online and found out how to find the center end of the yarn. Made quite the mess reaching in to find it. Had to wind the excess yarn around the tube about 300 times.
Speaking of the tube, the skein… my instructor said to enclose it in a stocking. Not to bother buying some fancy holder. So that is what I have my ball of yarn in. A clean knee high. What do you use?

Yay! I’m so glad you’re giving it another go!
I don’t use anything to hold the skein. Just pull from the center and get to work.
I was going to post a link yesterday and forgot. Remember how I said I struggled when I first started? Eight years later, here’s the kind of thing I enjoy making: http://aimeewrites.wordpress.com/2008/08/29/happy-shawl-joy/
You CAN do it!!
Wow!! That is a beautiful shawl you made for your mom.
Maybe one day I will be able to crochet something like that.
Fabulous results! If you wanted to have a go at quilting, check out Penny Halgren’s videos on Graspr. She’s a famed quilter. Also, you can always create your own videos on Graspr and use their easy editing tools to produce your own high quality videos. The sky’s the limit!
It’s great to hear you found what you needed on http://www.graspr.com. Thanks for sharing this with your readers! It’s possible to embed those videos on your site. If you’re interested in sharing what you’ve found, please contact me. Thank you again for sharing information on your craft, and on Graspr!
Aimee’s shawl is just lovely. Clever lady! And she has a very lucky Mom.
Donna, you have started. That is a very good beginning. One day in the future you will look back to this post and the ones before it and have a good chuckle – as you throw a shawl like Aimee’s around your shoulders, all made by you!
Thanks for the tip about the knee-hi. I pull the yarn out from the centre but it is a good idea to keep it inside something to keep it clean as well as stop it from unwinding and getting into a tangle. My Pusscat tends to want to chase it, and nothing tangles yarn more than an obsessed cat leaping on to it!
Thanks, Heddi. I will look at those videos when I get to quilting month.
Trish, yes, I would be interested. I sent you an e-mail.
Quilty, yep. I do feel like I have started. More practice is planned for today. I want to move on to single crochet.
