Making a Mesh Button Bracelet…Slow Going

Wednesday, June 25

Made a bit more progress last night.  Now 2 sections are filled with buttons. Two to go.

This is a works in progress and has been for about three weeks.

I have been slowly working on it. I know EXACTLY how I want it to look… in my mind. So when the mood hits, I pick it up.

Two weeks ago I connected the mesh discs together with jump rings. Can’t remember now why I switched to larger jump rings. Maybe to reduce the bracelet length.

Then a week ago I added the clasp. I am thinking I should have waited to add the clasp but I wanted to see how it looked before proceeding.

Now I am slowly sewing on the buttons.

I haven’t a clue what I will use to conceal the underside showing all the thread. I have decided to wait until all buttons are sewn on and then maybe an idea will pop into my head on how to finish it off.

  1. Lovely bracelet idea. How about some ultrasuede or leather sewn on for the underside?

  2. Hi there. That did cross my mind. I did experiment with yarn and also tiny beads going in and out the holes around the edges. Some of the metal holes have been cut through so I had to go up higher to the next hole. It looked messy and uneven so I abandoned the idea of covering the edges before adding the buttons. Maybe afterwards, the stitching won’t be as noticeable. Thanks for the suggestion.

  3. hey there…I have just scored a whole heap of vintage buttons from my boyfriends grandma yay!..Your project is a good one. I might try it. Love your site…I put a link to your right angle weave bracelet project from my blog. I tried the trackback thing to let you know..but I’m not sure it worked.
    See ya soon

  4. By the way..I’ve been meaning to ask…Are you a photographer? You have such fantastic photos.

  5. Hi Jess, thanks for the compliments. I bet those buttons are to die for. I finished sewing buttons on the last disc tonight. Now I have to decide what to use to cover the underside. Nope, not a photographer. Just wait for good sunlight and then rush for the camera.

  6. lol – good sunlight is something I’m lacking a bit at the moment. I live out in the hills of Melbourne in Gembrook. Perhaps you could use polymer clay…However it would depend on what your buttons are made of as you have to put it in the oven to set, albeit a low temperature, but all the same plastic buttons could be a bit of a disaster. Otherwise, ultra suede as someone mentioned.
    Good luck
