Checkerboard Fabric Therapy

Thursday, May 8

For two days I have been playing checkers with fabric squares. Moving them up, down, sideways, all around the white poster board I have them laying on.

I have about 900 little squares to choose from.  I purchased them from an online site a few months ago.  Fall colors; green, gold, brown and beige. Also bright and bold colors, some blue.

I have been admiring a cute little tote bag pattern that takes 40 3″ triangles on the front side and 40 on the back. Five strips of eight triangles per side. Thinking if I selected 40 for the front I could duplicate the same for the back. Trying to coordinate the colors as well as the fabric is hard work and mind boggling at times. One minute I have it the way I want it and then I see the same color too close together.  Then back to playing checkers.

Sensing I was never going to be satisfied with my selection, I headed to JoAnn’s. They have Fat Quarters on sale this week for just 99 cents. I found quite a few I liked.

Maybe I will make something from all three groupings. I haven’t sewn in a couple days and I am feeling the need to stitch up something. :D

  1. I knew it! I knew you would get addicted to sewing with fabric again! ;) :D

You could make a pillow with those squares, and then quilt the front side of the pillow before sewing the fronts and backs together. That would be a small quilt and then you could move on to making a larger quilt. Have you noticed that playing with squares and sewing with the triangles (when you get to that part) will actually be the beginning of your journey into the quilting world? ;)

  2. :D Yep, I could make some pillows to get the feel of sewing little squares. I want to make something with my new Fat Quarters. Hope it turns out pretty. It will be like quilting, you are right.

  3. I say make a patchwork quilt with those squares.

And must go to Joann’s to check to see if our store has .99 cent Fat Quarters!

  4. I just might do that. I have 3″, 4″ and 5″ squares.

My JoAnn’s has interfacing 50% off. Such good deals. I got all different weights and both sew-in and fusible. They also have a JoAnn Magazine you can buy for 2.99. It has six 50% off coupons on the back cover. I am going to use mine to stock up on denim.

  5. JoAnn’s also has Simplicity patterns for 1.99.

  6. What on earth would I need Simplicity Patterns for? :-) That’s what my mom and sister are for…

  7. :D

Tell them this week JoAnn’s has batting 50% off. Is this the stuff you put inside quilts?

I used one of my half off JoAnn’s coupons to buy a HUGE cutting mat. Whole thing measures 37″ by 25″.
